THE COLLECTION
Background
The museum is situated in Salisbury, in southern England. However, its collection is of interest throughout the world, either through the widespread service of our regiments over the last three centuries or the spread of people now interested in the regiments.
For various reasons many people cannot visit the museum to view the objects on display. There are also those who might like to visit but wish to know more before they do and those who have visited who wish to be reminded of what they saw. The remainder of the Collection, not visible here (roughly 10,000 items) is either still being prepared for the internet, eg many medal have still to be photographed, or is unsuitable, particularly many of the archive documents which are items like Mess Books or scrap books. In putting a significant proportion of our collection on our site we have sought both to provide greater access and to increase awareness such that more people will want to visit the museum itself.
Remember that most items used by soldiers are standard issue. A gas mask used by a soldier during World War 1 in the Royal Berkshire Regiment will be the same pattern used by tens of thousands of others throughout the British Army.
